Hags Glen Bridges

Kerry County Council have confirmed that two bridges will be erected early in 2010 in the Hags Glen to facilitate those crossing the Gaddagh and Glaisín Rivers on the way from Cronin's Yard to the main track into the Glen from Lisleibane.  The bridge structures have been provided free of charge by the Liebherr crane company in Killarney.  Floods in the two rivers have been the cause of a number of accidents, including at least one drowning.

Ordnance Survey Maps

Earlier this year Ordnance Survey Ireland announced that they intended changing the grid system for the Discovery series maps.  The OSI claimed that there would be advantages in changing form the Irish Grid to the International Transverse Mercator Grid, particularly relating to GPS use.  In addition they were proposing to reduce the numbers of maps by changing the size slightly and by printing on both sides.  The zero point of the grid would change from the current location south-west of Mizen Head to a point much  further south-west.  Mountaineering Ireland were part of the consultation process with the OSI and MI expressed several concerns, particularly the change of grid and printing on both sides of each map.

The good news is that the OSI have recently announced that the project will not proceed further at this time.
